Smart work, not hard work is the key to success
One day two woodcutters argued about which of them could cut more wood during a day. In the morning both men took their positions. First they worked at the same speed. But in an hour one of them heard that the other one had stopped cutting trees. Realizing that this was his chance, he doubled his efforts in cutting the trees.
Ten minutes passed, and he heard that the second woodcutter had started to working again. They were again working almost synchronously, and then, the first woodcutter heard that his opponent has stopped again. The first woodcutter continued working, already tasting certain victory.
This lasted all day long. Each hour one of the woodcutters stopped for ten minutes and the other one continued to work. When the day was done, the first woodcutter, who had worked without stopping, was absolutely sure that he won the prize.
He was astonished when he realized he had not won.
"How did that happen?" He asked his partner. "Each hour I heard that you stopped working for ten minutes. How could you have cut more trees than I did? It’s impossible!"
"It is possible and very simple, in fact," answered the second woodcutter, "each hour I stopped the work for ten minutes, while you were busy cutting more trees, I sharpened the axe."
