8 Safety Tips And Tricks That Are Worth Knowing

Kidnapping in particular is now a major crime in Nigeria. Somehow, we all always think that bad things cannot happen to us, but in the final analysis, it is better top be safe and prepared than to be sorry. These are just simple tips and tricks to help you escape harm.

1. If you are being robbed on the street, and the robber asks for your wallet as far from the predator as possible. His priority is likely the wallet and the second he goes to retrieve it, run like heck in the opposite direction.

2. If you are ever thrown into a trunk, kick out the back tail light and stick your hand out to alert other drivers.

3. What do thieves want? Your wallet? Yes. Feminine hygiene products? Absolutely not.

4. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, Repeat:DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

5. Always look confident. Walk with a straight posture and your arms swinging by your sides. Avoid slouching or walking like a victim. This makes you an easy target for attackers.

6. Don't think that if you are in a car, you are safe. Windows should be up and doors locked even when driving to avoid unwanted passengers at intersections. When you are walking to your car, always have your keys ready, so that you can quickly get into your car. But don't just get in right away. Always check your car before entering, especially the back, for any intruders.

7. If you must fight back your attacker, adopt what police term the ‘bash and dash’ approach. Primary targets are the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, throat, groin, knees or shins; choose whichever is easiest to get to. Hit your attacker hard and then run for it. Even when an attacker has a gun, running is your best option, chances of being hit by a bullet are 4 in 100, and the shooter is unlikely to hit any vital organs.

8. Always be observant when approaching an ATM. If it is a dark area or there are bushes, or someone is lingering around the area–find another ATM. Always have your card ready, keep your doors locked and make your transaction as quickly as possible. Make it a habit to go to ATM’s when it is light outside.

Make safety high priority!
