In Anticipation Of iOS 9: The Evolution of The iPhone Home Screen Over The Years In Photos

As iPhone lovers prepare for the unveiling of the iOS 9 tomorrow, June 8, let's take a walk through time to the very first iPhone Apple ever created and it's other versions since then. A lot has changed on the iPhone since iPhone OS 1.0 was launched in 2007.

iPhone Os 1.0

Launched on January 9, 2007. It had no app store and you could not download 3rd party apps on it.

iPhone OS 2.0

The iPhone 3G was launched in July 2008. The original iPhone could upgrade to iPhone OS 2.0. App store was introduced and upgrading provided access to third party apps.

iPhone OS 3.0

OS 3.0 was released in June 2009. This software came pre-installed on the iPhone 3GS. OS 3.0 allowed users to copy and paste for the first time and introduced the first landscape keyboard.

iOS 4

iOS 4 came out in June 2010 with the multi tasking features, allowing users to switch between open applications without having to close and re open them. The 'iOS' name series also started with iOS 4 as against the former 'iPhone' GameCentre and FaceTime started with iOS4.

iOS 5

iOS 5 was launched in 2012. Apple introduced iMessage with this release, which introduced free messaging and allowed Apple to compete with BlackBerry's popular BBM messaging service.Newsstand also showed up in iOS 5, giving users a place to store and read news stories and articles. iOS 5 came pre-installed on the iPhone 4S.

iOS 6

The iPhone 5 came out in September 2012, and came pre-installed with iOS 6, which is where Apple announced its own Apple Maps app along with Passbook, which gave people a place to store their gift cards, airline boarding passes, and e-tickets.

iOS 6 was also the first iPhone software that allowed you to take 360-degree panorama photos, as well as the ability to make FaceTime calls over cellular data.

iOS 7

No other iPhone software has caused quite the stir that iOS 7 did when it arrived in September 2013, with its flat and colorful redesign. Beside its new look, iOS 7 also introduced Apple's fingerprint technology, Touch ID, a new way to wirelessly transfer files with AirDrop, improved multitasking, and the ability to make FaceTime audio calls for crystal-clear sound quality.

iOS 8

Apple's iOS 8 came out in September 2014. It didn't feature a bold redesign like its predecessor, but it did introduce a variety of new features such as Apple Pay, Continuity (allowing users to transfer particular tasks between a Mac and iPhone or iPad), support for third-party keyboards, and a new native Health app for keeping track of your fitness and vitals. iOS 8 came pre-installed on the iPhone 6.

iOS 9

By June 8, the truth will be revealed about iOS 9, but before then, the rumoured features include a more powerful Siri, split-screen multitasking on iPads, an Apple Maps app with transit directions, and a huge focus on stability.
