Tola struggled with the weight of several shopping bags as she walked back to her car as fast as she could manage. It was getting dark already and she didn't like night driving. She was exhausted already. It had been a mistake to wait so late to do her shopping. The crowds everywhere was almost unbearable. Queues and tussles seemed to be the only way to get anything to buy. Prices had skyrocketed and it just didn't seem worth it.
She hadn't gone far from the market when she had to slow down to a stop. The traffic was bumper to fender and stretched before her as far as her eyes could see. She almost swore in frustration. She decided to check how much money she had left, she would have to buy sone black market fuel at this rate. No time to sit in a queue for fuel after all these.
She got out her purse and was counting what was left of the bundles on 1000 naira notes she had gotten from the ATM earlier that day. She saw her phone's notification light blinking in her purse so she picked up the Samsung galaxy to read and respond to her chats.
Told had her eyes on her phone and her open purse with money in her lap when suddenly there was a loud, shattering sound of glass. The next thing she knew there was glass in her laps, and all around her and a dark hand had reached in and grabbed her phone and the purse from her lap. Told was too shocked to do anything but scream...
Unfortunately there have been too many 'Tolus' this season with similar stories. The festive season is still on and you should take note of the following safety and security tips to avoid unfortunate incidences.
Shop early to avoid last minute rush and the associated exposure.
Avoid “shopping” while in traffic even though it may seem convenient – you are neither sure of the quality of goods you are buying or the person who is selling!
Remain vigilant and exercise caution when visiting shopping malls, markets, hotels, parks, leisure places, and especially when attending events that attract large number of persons - places of worship mayfall into this category. Bear in mindthat these places have increased security exposure.
If you will be travelling, ensure that details of your travel plan are knownonly to trusted family member(s) or friend(s). Be extra careful with domestic staff during this period.
Vary your routine as much aspossible and always place yoursafety and security first when deciding on route to use.
Conclude all movements well before dark and avoid keeping late nights as much as possible. Take additional security measures to protect yourself if you have to be out late.
